The worshippers abducted during a violent attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) crusade in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, have regained their freedom after spending several weeks in captivity.

The victims were reportedly released around midnight on Friday and have since been taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment due to their deteriorating physical and emotional condition.

Sources disclosed that one of the 15 worshippers kidnapped during the incident died while in captivity, while the remaining victims are receiving medical attention and psychological support following their ordeal.

According to reports, the victims’ release was secured without any visible intervention from government authorities or security agencies. However, the circumstances surrounding their freedom, including whether a ransom was paid, remain unclear.

The abduction occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, when suspected gunmen invaded an open-air crusade organized by the Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti. The attackers opened fire, killing the officiating pastor before abducting 15 worshippers and whisking them away to an unknown location.

The incident sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the rising wave of insecurity and kidnappings across parts of Ekiti State. Residents, religious leaders, and concerned Nigerians had repeatedly called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the victims’ safe return.

While families have expressed gratitude over the release of the surviving worshippers, the death of one of the captives has cast a shadow over what would have been a moment of celebration. Many have also called on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen security to prevent similar attacks.
