State Government Declares Thursday Public Holiday for Isese Day
The Lagos State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents to celebrate this year’s Isese Day and promote Yoruba traditional heritage.
The declaration affects public servants, political appointees and other government workers across the state, giving them the opportunity to participate in activities lined up for the annual cultural and spiritual celebration.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the state government, more than three million people are expected to participate in various activities marking the celebration, which is expected to attract traditional worshippers and cultural enthusiasts.
Aregbe described Isese as a living part of Yoruba culture and spirituality, stressing that the tradition remains relevant to millions of people in Nigeria and across the world.
He noted that Yoruba communities and cultural groups in countries including Cuba, Brazil and other parts of the Caribbean continue to preserve and maintain links with Yoruba traditional practices.
Isese Day is observed following a week-long programme of traditional activities. In Lagos, the day has been recognised as a work-free day since 2023 following a request by the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
The government urged residents and visitors to participate peacefully in the activities while using the celebration as an opportunity to promote and preserve Yoruba cultural heritage.
