The Governing Councils of federal universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria will be inaugurated on July 4, 2024, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, has announced.
President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of these governing bodies for the effective management of Nigerian tertiary institutions, according to a statement from the Permanent Secretary, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nnamdi Mbaeri.
A total of 560 individuals have been appointed to serve on the governing councils and boards of federal government-owned tertiary institutions. Some of the key appointments include:
– Chief Bisi Akande as the Chairman of the University of Ibadan Governing Council, with Alexander Ajipe, Nelson Alapa, Ifeoma Nwankwo, and Prof. Emmanuel Alo as members.
– Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) as the Chairman of the University of Lagos Governing Council, with Bello Kumo, Prof. Idowu Mark, Niyi Akande, and Bola Njoku as members.
– Isa Yuguda as the Chairman of the National Open University Governing Council, with Goddy Etta, Yomi Balogun, Deborah Apah, and Hingah Biem as members.
– Siyan Oyeweso as the head of the Obafemi Awolowo University Governing Council, with Edward Sarki, Joseph Abaagu, Wahaab Owokoniran, and Abubakar Kachaalla as members.
– Adebayo Shittu, Muiz Banire, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa as the Chairpersons of the Governing Boards for David Umahi University of Medicine in Ebonyi State, Federal University of Transportation in Katsina State, and Federal Polytechnic in Ugep, Cross River State, respectively.
The inauguration of these governing councils and boards is expected to enhance the effective management and governance of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
