In a groundbreaking move, Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 for civil servants in the state, effective immediately.
According to Murtala Usman, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress in Kebbi State, the governor chose the highest proposed amount after the union presented three options: N72,000, N73,000, and N75,000.
“Mr. Governor has shown that he is with the workers in the state,” Usman said in an interview. “We proposed three tables for him, and he decided to go for the highest, N75,000, which shows he is for the workers.”
The new minimum wage is a significant increase from the previous N30,000 implemented in 2020. Governor Idris has also directed that the new salaries be paid within the next 72 hours.
“This is a welcome development for civil servants in Kebbi State,” Usman added. “We commend the governor for his commitment to workers’ welfare.”
Meanwhile, the labour union in neighboring Sokoto State has appealed to the state government to expedite actions on the new minimum wage.
The Kebbi State government’s decision is expected to boost morale and living standards for civil servants in the state.
