The National Agency for Food, Drug and Administration Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a fish cold room in Ado‑Ekiti, Ekiti State’s capital, after receiving reports of rotten and unhealthy fish being sold to consumers.
NAFDAC State Coordinator, Mrs Stella Dosunu, revealed that the operation was prompted by a customer complaint. The complainant purchased fish from the facility and found it unfit for consumption, prompting immediate regulatory intervention.
The facility’s owner, identified as Mr Olatunji, defended the deteriorated quality, attributing it to recent epileptic power supply that compromised the cooling system. However, NAFDAC officials did not accept this justification, citing that maintaining the cold chain during power outages is the responsibility of the facility. The agency promptly sealed the premises to prevent further public health risks.
A crowd of customers gathered at the scene, some pleading for leniency and vowing to support corrective measures to avoid such incidents in the future. Despite these appeals, NAFDAC emphasized that the enforcement reflects its zero‑tolerance position on food safety infractions.
Mrs Dosunu stated, “This action demonstrates our commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that only wholesome food products reach consumers in Ekiti State.”
The agency continues to investigate and has warned other cold storage operators to maintain rigorous standards, especially in regions prone to power instability.
