NANS Seeks EFCC Resolution Over Case Against BUK Student Maryam Isah Shehu
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reached out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the ongoing case against Maryam Isah Shehu, a student of Bayero University Kano (BUK).

NANS said it is seeking a resolution that could lead to the discontinuation of the case, expressing concern over the possible impact of the legal proceedings on the student’s academic progress.
According to an amended charge dated August 20, 2026, Maryam Isah Shehu is facing a charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged social media publication concerning the EFCC.
The charge alleges that she intentionally published a message through her Instagram account, @maryam_shehu, which was intended to tarnish the reputation of the anti-graft agency.
The document further states that the publication alleged that EFCC officials assaulted one Ahmed Uthman under the instruction of a Zonal Director who allegedly collected N20 million from one Usman Iya Abbas.
The alleged offence was brought under Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
However, NANS said it is engaging the EFCC and other relevant authorities responsibly and constructively in an effort to secure a favourable resolution.
The student’s examinations are reportedly approaching, prompting the students’ body to raise concerns about the effect of the ongoing legal matter on her studies and future.
“NANS is deeply concerned about the impact of the ongoing situation on her academic progress and future,” the students’ body said in a statement.
The association added that it would continue to engage the relevant authorities and provide further updates as developments unfold.
The statement was signed by the NANS leadership.
