Premier League Season Begins With Arsenal-Coventry Clash on Friday
The wait is finally over as the English Premier League returns today, Friday, August 21, with the 2026/27 campaign getting underway in what promises to be another fiercely contested season.
The opening round begins at the Emirates Stadium, where reigning champions Arsenal welcome newly promoted Coventry City in the first fixture of the new campaign. The match marks the beginning of another 380-game journey that will ultimately determine the next Premier League champion, European qualifiers and relegated sides.
Arsenal head into the season as defending champions and will be determined to make a strong start to their title defence. Their meeting with Coventry is particularly significant for the visitors, who are returning to the Premier League after 25 years away from the English top flight.
The new season also brings major changes across several of the league’s biggest clubs. Manchester United will begin life under Michael Carrick against newly promoted Hull City, while Manchester City enter a new era under Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure. Liverpool, meanwhile, start the campaign under new manager Andoni Iraola and face a difficult opening trip to Newcastle United.
Chelsea will also have a new manager in the dugout, with former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso beginning his Premier League tenure with an away fixture against Fulham on Monday. Tottenham Hotspur, another club looking to bounce back from a disappointing previous campaign, face Brentford in their opening match.
The opening weekend therefore offers more than just the return of league football. It provides the first competitive glimpse of new managers, new signings, promoted clubs and teams attempting to establish themselves at the top of English football.
Among the standout fixtures is Newcastle United’s meeting with Liverpool at St James’ Park. Liverpool are beginning a new chapter following significant changes to their squad and coaching setup, while Newcastle will also be looking to make a statement in front of their home supporters.
Manchester City will travel into the weekend as one of the clubs expected to challenge Arsenal for the title, but their opening home fixture against Bournemouth will provide an early test of Maresca’s new-look side.
For Manchester United, the trip to Hull City presents an opportunity to begin the campaign positively, while Tottenham’s visit to Brentford could offer an early indication of how the club will respond after a difficult previous season.
With three newly promoted teams — Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town — joining the division, the battle at the bottom is also expected to be intense. Ipswich begin their return to the Premier League at home against Sunderland, another club eager to establish themselves in the top flight.
