Algeria staged a spirited comeback to earn a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria in one of the most captivating matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing a place in the Round of 32 after an unforgettable contest at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

The high-stakes Group J encounter delivered six goals, end-to-end action and a dramatic stoppage-time finish as both sides booked their places in the knockout stage, while Iran suffered a heartbreaking exit from the tournament.

Austria drew first blood in the 28th minute when experienced striker Marko Arnautović calmly slotted home after a well-worked move. Algeria responded just before the interval through Rafik Belghali, whose composed finish restored parity and reignited his side’s hopes.

The second half exploded into life with Austria once again taking the lead in the 55th minute courtesy of Marcel Sabitzer. However, Algeria refused to surrender as captain Riyad Mahrez stepped up with a clinical finish minutes later to level the score at 2-2.

As the match entered stoppage time, Mahrez looked to have completed a memorable comeback, firing home in the 93rd minute to give Algeria a dramatic 3-2 advantage and send their supporters into wild celebrations.

But Austria had one final twist left. Deep into added time, substitute Sasa Kalajdžić rose above the defence to head home a dramatic equaliser in the 96th minute, rescuing a priceless point for his side and ensuring both teams advanced to the knockout rounds.

The pulsating encounter will go down as one of the most entertaining games of the tournament so far, showcasing resilience, attacking football and late drama worthy of the world’s biggest sporting stage.

Following the result, Austria will face Spain in the Round of 32, while Algeria prepare for a mouthwatering clash against Switzerland as both nations continue their quest for FIFA World Cup glory.
