Court Grants Ekiti APC Governorship Aspirant Abimbola Olawumi Bail Over Alleged Cyberstalking, Defamation
An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has granted bail to All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Abimbola Olajumoke Olawumi, who is facing trial over alleged cyberstalking, criminal defamation and threats.
Olawumi was arraigned on Thursday on a four-count charge bordering on the alleged transmission of threatening messages through social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok. She pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against her.
According to the prosecution, the APC aspirant allegedly posted the photographs and residential addresses of three individuals,Mrs. Yemisi Samuel Joluwe, Mr. Adeleke Ajibade and Mrs. Okewale Olayemi, alongside threatening messages on social media, an act said to contravene Section 398 of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
The prosecution further alleged that Olawumi falsely accused one of the complainants, Mrs. Joluwe, of embezzling Ekiti State Government funds without justification, an offence punishable under Section 106 of the state’s Criminal Law.
During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor Samson Osobu informed the court that the prosecution did not oppose the defendant’s bail application. Defence counsel, A.O. Okunade, urged the court to grant bail, arguing that the charges were bailable and noting that his client is a respected indigene of the state and a former governorship aspirant.
In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun admitted Olawumi to bail on self-recognition. The court subsequently adjourned the matter until July 28, 2026, for further hearing.
The case has attracted public attention because of Olawumi’s involvement in Ekiti State politics and comes amid heightened political activities following the state’s governorship contest.
