The Federal Government has approved a new registration fee of ₦50,000 for candidates sitting the 2027 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).

The approval was contained in an official letter dated June 18, 2026, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, Office of the Director, Senior Secondary Education Department, and addressed to the Registrar of NECO.

According to the ministry, WAEC had requested an upward review of examination fees for SSCE school candidates beginning from 2027. The request was discussed during a meeting of examination bodies held with the Honourable Minister of Education on March 31, 2026, where it was resolved that both WAEC and NECO should adopt a uniform registration fee for their Senior School Certificate Examinations.

The letter further stated that the Honourable Minister of Education approved the sum of ₦50,000 as the examination fee per candidate, with effect from the 2027 NECO SSCE (Internal). The directive is expected to ensure uniformity in the registration charges of both examination bodies.

The Ministry directed NECO to communicate the new fee to all relevant stakeholders to facilitate adequate awareness and preparations ahead of the 2027 examination exercise.

The new registration fee is expected to generate reactions among parents, students, school administrators and other education stakeholders, as many families continue to grapple with rising living costs across the country.
