NASU Members to Benefit as NUC Orders Immediate Implementation of 2026 FGN Agreement
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has directed all Federal and State Universities, as well as Inter-University Centres across Nigeria, to immediately begin the implementation of the 2026 Agreement signed between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

The directive was contained in an official circular dated July 8, 2026, signed by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, and addressed to Pro-Chancellors of Federal and State Universities.
According to the commission, the agreement was signed on June 29, 2026, after a series of negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding issues affecting the Nigerian university system and improving the welfare of non-academic staff.
The NUC stated that the agreement is expected to strengthen industrial harmony, improve staff welfare, enhance institutional stability and create a more peaceful working environment in public universities across the country.
Professor Ribadu noted that the implementation of the agreement would further support the restoration and sustenance of industrial peace while promoting steady progress within Nigeria’s university system.
He directed university authorities to ensure that the contents of the agreement are immediately communicated to all relevant organs and units within their institutions for prompt implementation in line with approved procedures and existing regulations.
The commission also urged all institutions to give the agreement the attention it deserves in order to ensure its smooth and effective implementation.
In the same directive, the NUC called on all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that participated in the negotiation process to provide the necessary administrative, financial and technical support required for the successful execution of the agreement.
The commission expressed confidence that the implementation of the agreement would improve the relationship between government and university workers, reduce industrial disputes and strengthen the stability of Nigeria’s public tertiary education system.
The circular, referenced NUC/ES/236/Vol.3/296, was accompanied by a copy of the signed 2026 FGN-NASU Agreement, which universities are expected to use as a guide during implementation.
The latest move by the National Universities Commission is expected to bring relief to thousands of NASU members working in public universities, as stakeholders anticipate that the implementation of the agreement will address key welfare issues and further promote industrial peace across the nation’s higher education sector.
